At night, when it is bright in a room and dark outside, windows appear like mirrors, reflecting the room back on itself. It's easy, then, to think only of the room and the actions that are happening in the room, without any thought of the outside world. Especially in a room above ground level. Humans always seem to look eye-level, not as often up or down.
A second-story bedroom, or a hotel room on an upper floor. At night. The glass of the window a mirror. It's easy to imagine that this couple hasn't even considered that someone could be watching.
Then again... maybe that's exactly what they considered...
