PURPLE LUPINE

Lupines are some of the best-known wildflowers in the world, with over 165 species. The highest concentration of the lovely purple flower occurs in the Pacific Northwest, with more than 50 species. Their latin name is Lupinus, and they are a member of the pea family. They grow well in soil where other flowers cannont, along stream beds, sandy shores, and alpine meadows. Butterflies love lupine, as do hikers and gardeners. And, apparently, this woman. I love them, too.
